SCAD Graduate Course Work

Methods of Contextual Research

Working in groups of three over the semester, we implemented design thinking to find a need in the market, and came up with a specialized product to meet that need. My sister has epilepsy, so we came up with glasses that could track seizures and assist bystanders with first aid.

Fundamentals of Business Design

This was the introductory course for the Creative Business Leadership program. We received a general overview of the factors that affect the business world, and learned about various business strategy models over time. Over the course of the semester, we thoroughly examined a business of our choosing. I chose the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina!

Finance & Accounting

As a pre-requisite for my degree, and to improve my financial vocabulary and literacy, this course covered basic accounting. We learned about best money practices and non-profit finance. We completed case studies as well, to practice interpreting real financial records.

Business Innovation

We worked on best practices for presentations, studied growth frameworks, and learned about what businesses can do to prepare for the future. Over the quarter, we followed one company of our choosing, and proposed strategies for how it might prepare for its next stage of growth.

Entrepreneurship

This course was at the heart of what I learned at SCAD! This course served as the market research portion of my thesis project, which is a YouTube channel called Purple Buds. Click on the Graduate Final Project page for more details, or on the process links below.

We learned all about famous leaders throughout history. We studied what made them great, and how different types of strengths can contribute to the success of a given enterprise.

Funding Creative Businesses

In this class, we learned about how businesses are funded by investors. Using an actual Shark Tank pitch as the basis for our course project, we came up with a venture idea, and practiced how it might play out. The company I picked is called Kids Luv; I was able to speak with the founder of the company about her business plan, which was awesome! A fun course.

Transformative Leadership

This was one of my favorite courses! Our professor taught us about emotional intelligence, systems thinking, risk management, interpersonal issues at work, and how current events interact with how businesses are run. A thoroughly useful class!

Elective: Interior Design

This course was about contemporary issues in interior design, and felt like a return to my roots. In this class, we read scholarship on many of the main issues facing the field of interior design today; for example, at the end of the quarter, I was part of a group project that presented on minority issues in interior design.
